The last several weeks, it has just been Hugh and I, not to mention all the technical issues and lack of “SyFy Original” films of late. And Hugh and I have other projects we would rather work on. So I am cancelling it. It was fun, and my heart felt thanks to those who have come out to help us “make these films better”; but it is done.

Thanks again for all your support.

Let’s face facts, the SyFy Channel makes a lot of bad movies, but they tend to excel at films about monsters. Movies like Sea Beast, Wyvern, and Sabertooth, although silly at points, were fun to watch. And hopefully, this week will be no different as SyFy premier’s Goblin. Apparently, the creature – the goblin, eats babies, so this film should involved family trying to save the infants from the CGI menace. It has not one I have heard of before in it, unlike the other films I mention about which stared the likes Camille Sullivan, Corin Nemec, David Keith, John Rhys-Davies, Vanessa Angel, and Don S. Davis; but I still hold out hope that it being a monster film (and not having been made by The Asylum) will save it from the scrap heap of SyFy Original failures.

So help ensure Goblin is a fun experience for all, please come out and join us on the virtual couch live at 7:45 PM CT/5:45 PM PT/8:45 PM ET on July 17th, 2010. Lets all work together to make this film better. (The first 3 people to join us with SKYPE can join the live call. Details will be posted to the chat room.)

There is no recap from last weeks movie Jurassic Park.

Saturday Night in the Snark Cave will not be showing the film or playing it’s audio track.
“No.” Bob Roberts said in a whisper. “It can’t be.”

“What?” Jeff asked turning from the screen to Bob. “Who is that?”

“My father, Major James Roberts.” Bob said as he stared. “He was lost during the Delta 3 probe incident 20 years ago.”

“Oh.” Jeff turned back to the screen.

“He’s… it’s speaking.” Bob said. “Does this probe have audio?”

“Yes.” Jeff reached down an typed a quick command into the terminal.

“Kor-rag comes!” The voice of Major Roberts said through the speaker. Then one of the thing’s tentacles grabbed the probe and the speaker and screen went dead.

Roberts stared at the monitor and tried to ignore the smug satisfaction plastered across Jeff’s face.

Dark creatures swarmed out of a new crater on Io. The moon’s surface was covered, undulating like ripples on an oily pond.

“What…” Roberts croaked. Then he punched the comm and barked, “Fergus? What assets have we got–”

A burst of static interrupted him—but that wasn’t why Roberts stopped.

On the black-and-white screen in front of him, even through the distortion of Jupiter’s intensely powerful EMF, he plainly saw a gelatinous, tentacled nightmare staring back at him with his father’s face.

In this world that we live in, there is a great desire to combine things in hopes that the combination of the two makes things is better that either one alone. For example Peanut Butter and Chocolate (Reeses Peanut Butter Cups), Rum and Coke (Cuba Libre), and Megashark vs. Giant Octopus. And this week on SyFy Channel and here in the Snark Cave, that great tradition continues with Dincroc vs. Supergator. This is not the first team up of the giant monster kind presented by the SyFy Channel. They have given us Boa vs Python and the afore mentioned Megashark vs. Giant Octopus to name two, but this one is special. Special for three reasons. This one does not have DebroahGibson in it. It is one of David Carradine’s last films. And, assuming everything goes right, Hugh and Taylor will be live physically together in the Snark Cave for it’s screening.

So come join us on the virtual couch on Saturday, June 26th, 2010 at 7:45 PM CT/8:45 PM ET/ 5:45 PM PT for Dincroc vs. Supergator.

The elevator doors slide open and Roberts exits the chrome box. An emotional storm of anger, disappointment, frustration for canceling on his wife twists in his mind. Roberts mentally wrestles with himself, ”What if Jeff has found them? It’s too soon. Gawd damn it, Jeff, you better not have screwed up everything.” Pushing open the lab doors Roberts coldly teases,”Talk to me, Jeff! What do we have here: a shadow, a rock, a mound of dirt? Jeff does not answer. Roberts joins Jeff in silence as they watch a video feed of a tentacled creature crawling towards the camera.

(And I could be wrong.) But originally planned or not, this week we have The Seamstress, a supernatural horror flick with at least a small appearance by the legendary Lance Henriksen.
“Four-freakin-45 on a Friday! Seriously?” Roberts swore as he punched the button for the elevator with his thumb. “At least the ride downstairs will be quick,” he said out loud to nobody except himself. “So much for date night,” he thought. Roberts pulled out his cell phone and called his wife to explain he’d miss their date as the doors to the elevator opened. “Hi honey,” he said to her voice mail, “I’m going to be late again. Someone probably thinks he discovered life on Io.” He hung up and punched the button for the 4th floor and swore again.

As the video feed faded to static Jeff thought “This isn’t good !” He sent another probe, this time he had it land on higher ground to get an overview of the situation. The video now showed hundreds of the creatures spreading out from the crash site. Jeff got on the phone to his supervisor. “Mr. Roberts, we’ve got a problem.” “Define ‘problem’ Jeff” Mr. Roberts said. “you need to come down here and see this, it looks like an invasion.” “Sit tight, I’ll be right there.” said Mr. Roberts as he grabbed his lab coat and headed to the lab.

Well the SyFy Channel and The Asylum are at it again, and because of it Edgar Rice Borroughs is rolling over in his grave. Actually, I hope that he has burst forth as a supernatural force of vengeance with a can of gasoline and a portable flight of stair, but I suspect that the people at The Asylum will get off scott-free yet again. If you are wondering the movie this week is The Asylum’s version of Edgar Rice Borroughs’ A Princess of Mars called Princess of Mars. A Princess of Mars was the first in Borroughs’ epic planet and sword series staring John Carter and set on Barsoom (Mars). Let us hope that Princess of Mars is not another epic fail from The Asylum like The Land That Time Forgot, Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, and AVH (Alien vs. Hunter); but in there last adaptation of a Borroughs’ story it was clear that had not bothered to actually read the novel and based on what I have seen so far that is true in this case as well.

If you are wondering why I am spewing so much venom about this film in particular it is because I grew up with Borroughs’ stories and the John Carter stories were among my very favorites. And, of course, The Asylum maybe the worst film company in existence today. For the love off all that is good and right, Tars Tarkas a Thark (green martians) should be a giant with four arms not a short guy in bad mask. And don’t get me started about Antonio Sabata Jr playing John Carter, a Civil War era Virginian, or Tracy Lords playing Deja Thoris, the Princess of Mars.

So come join us on the virtual couch for Princess of Mars on Saturday June 5th at 7:45 PM CT (5:45 PM PT/6:45 PM MT/8:45 PM ET) on ustream.tv. This film is really going to new our help.

The meteorite crashed into the surface of the Jovian moon Io. Jeff marveled at the luck of a tiny object flying through space and smashing into a larger, but still small object. From his lab on Lightning station, Jeff sent a probe down to the volcanic surface to scan the meteor. The first data came back revealed high amounts of alloys, suggesting non-natural composition. When the video feed went live to show creatures crawling out of the wreckage, Jeff decided perhaps random chance had less to do with this event than he had thought. Then tentacles ripped the probe asunder.

He drops the blade, panting in the high bright sun and baking sand of the now-silent arena. Hands on knees, he surveys the bones of the fallen. He nods, wipes his brow, and glares up at the single observer.

“How many times now? And how many more, demon?” he croaks thirstily.

The red-skinned devil answers with a silent grin, spreading and relaxing its wings in the heat of the sun.

He hears the rasp of bones converging across the sand. They click into shape again, as he chuckles. “One more time. Always.”

The SyFy Channel has a long standing tradition of making fantasy (as in sword and sorcery) films that are either pretty good or absolute crap. (Dungeons and Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God is an example of one of SyFy’s good fantasy films. Dark Relic and Cyclops are examples of bad ones.) There is rarely anything in between. This week they are premiering another sword and sorcery piece one called Witchville. From the trailers, this one looks like it falls in the later catagory, but we here at Saturday Night in the Snark Cave are eternal optimists. We hope that the film will be better than expected, and we know that with your help we can make this film better. So come join us on the virtual couch for Witchville on Saturday May 22nd at 7:45 PM CT (5:45 PM PT/6:45 PM MT/8:45 PM ET) on ustream.tv, and help us make this film better.

Here is a trailer for Witchville:

There is no recap of last weeks movie due to technical difficulties.

Fine print and/or technical details:

Saturday Night in the Snark Cave will not be showing the film or playing it’s audio track. You will need to sit down with your laptop or computer and watch the movie on TV (on the SyFy Channel) and listen while we talk bad about it (or good if the film is good).
My eyes opened to the stars. I saw the most brilliant spectacle of both pinpoint lights and sweeping galaxies, and caught my breath at the enormity of life, and how precious it is. The damp grass was wet upon my back and bare leg and smoke still hung about my body like a free-floating shroud. The pain in my head was replaced by a noise that blended with the cricket song and somewhere a dog was barking its mad yelps at a car. Through it all I realized that I couldn’t move. Resigning myself, I simply lay there in wonder.

Nothing says SyFy Saturday Night like a movie about a cryptid, and this week we have another in that long tradition, Mongolian Death Worm. Yes, a film about giant worms living in Mongolia starring Sean Patrick Flanery of Boondock Saints fame. To be fair, the SyFy Channel does do a pretty good job with films about worms and snakes and the CGI in the commercials looks pretty good, so this might actually have some redeeming qualities. And if they follow the legend, there will be a lot of potential for some outrageous gory monster action. So come out and join us on the virtual couch at 7:45 PM CT/8:45 PM ET/5:45 PM PT (and 6:45 PM MT) on Saturday, May 8th, 2010 for Mongolian Death Worm.

Conscience

by

Jeremy C. Shipp

In the attic, Conscience pulls a tiny car out of his massive pocket. And peering in, I see a wriggling mass of oversized shoes and polka dot ties and painted-on smiles, and I want to drown in their flesh.

“How do I get in there?” I say.

“You’ll have to become smaller than you are.”

“Like Alice in Wonderland?”

“I’m afraid I’m not familiar with that particular human.”

So I eat the crumpled up photo of my family, and I finally will myself to make the wrong choice.

The clowns giggle at my suffering, and I giggle along with them.

My brother, Alan, had no clue where we were going. I told him I found a quicker way home. He wasn’t believing me. He said if I tried anything funny he would kick my ass. I believed him. Everyday he would pound on me playing slug bug. Red! Whap! Blue! Pop! It was a game we played everyday walking to and from school. Today was different. I found a new way to walk home. Just then it happened, on the corner of Justice and Revenge stood five of my friends. Together we surrounded my brother in front of Morrison VW.

Truth gulped his third whiskey. “Nobody wants me,” he mumbled.

His companion, a handsome, stylishly-dressed man with tinted contacts, asked, “What do you mean?”

Truth said, “Life’s gravy for you, Philosophy. People expect you to be exactly what they want. But when they invite me over, it’s all, ‘Can’t you hide those warts? Maybe lose a few pounds?’”

“It’s all relative,” Philosophy said.

Truth’s eyes narrowed.

“What I see when I look at you may not be what anyone else sees.”

Truth left Philosophy lying on the floor in a puddle of wine spritzer.

The Hitcher make in 1986 is still one of the scariest film ever made, and, in my humble opinion, it was the greatest performance of Rutger Hauer career. Unfortunately, in 2007 The Hitcher was remade with Sean Bean starring in the lead role of John Ryder. The same role played by Rutger Hauer in 1986. First, I am going to say, this film did not need to be remade. In fact, I am going to say it again. This film did not need to be remade. I would also like to note that I am a fan of Sean Bean. I think that he was great in Silent Hill, National Treasure, and Equilibrium; but I just don’t think he will be able to top Hauer’s portrayal of John Ryder. We will see because our friends at The SyFy Channel have decided to show the 2007 version of The Hitcher this week on Saturday night. And you know what that means … it means that it will be this weeks feature on Saturday Night in the Snark Cave. So come out and help us make this film better at 7:45 PM CT on ustream.tv. We’ll save a spot of the virtual couch for you.

The story this week was written by John Wilkerson. The story is copyrighted by the author. Here is the original text:

The truth of the matter is that I never really got along with others. People bother me. Their breath stinks. They talk too loud. Everyone thinks they’re entitled to something. That’s why I went on this little retreat. I needed to get away from all of those people with their stares, looks of disdain, mocking comments, and berating laughs all directed at me. So I took a trip to a place where nobody would bother me. A place where the people around me are crazier than I am. Excuse me, could some please loosen this strap? I have an itch.

This week we leave Eragon in the dust, as we head for more coastal climes in order to experiences the horror of Mega Piranha. Normally, we would have high hopes for a monster films with giant fish, but this film was made by our arch enemy’s The Asylum. The people who have brought use the possibly worst film ever made AVH: Alien vs Hunter as well as Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. (Our trailer for the Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus was better than the actually movie, I would like to note.) And Mega Piranha starts Debbie Gibson’s rival Tiffany. Let us hope that the combination of Tiffany, Barry Williams, and Paul Logan can save this film from the slockery for which The Asylum is known. This film will definitely need our help, so come out and help us make this film better at 7:45 PM CT on ustream.tv. We’ll save a spot on the virtual couch for you.

Joey leapt from the ladder and flew across the backyard, over the house, and landed in the tree in the front yard. “This is pretty coool ! ” he thought, as he took off down the street. When he got to the main road he landed on the roof of a minivan and began car surfin’. As the minivan crossed the bridge over the river, Joey dove into the water. He swam underwater navigating the rocks for several minutes before surfacing. BEEP … BEEP … BEEP … ! Joey’s alarm roared to life as he jerked back into reality. “Dammit ! I’m Awake !” he said, “This SUCKS !!!”

Randall opened his eyes when the bright flashes of time travel stopped. It was darkness all around, as he suspected. The flashlight revealed the expected body wrapped in burial clothes. Now, to wait.

The beeping motion sensor woke Randall. Before him the body sat up and the clothes unraveled themselves, revealing a living man. The man raised his arms up.

“Braiiiins!”

Randall stumbled back, terrified. The man laughed.

“Just kidding. You’ve got to get out of here before Mary shows up. See you soon!”

Randall returned to a loud trumpet blast. He saw Jesus again moments later on Judgment Day.

I met myself tonight. Coming out of the lab. He looked like me—a little older, but definitely me.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“You know,” he said.

“So the time machine works?”

“Yes,” he said. “Tomorrow, you switch it on—and the world goes to hell. I’m here to stop you.” He meant it. I know that look.

“Wait,” I said. “You’re my future. Kill me and you disappear.”

He frowned. “Yeah. You’re right.” And he left.

So tomorrow, I make history, and—wait a minute. That’s just the kind of thing I’d say to…

Victoricus walked toward me with a bundle of letters in his hands and he handed them to me. I opened one and and it read, “To our Saint Patrick, Come and save your people of Ireland. Walk amongst us.” It read like prophecy of the deeds I have yet to do. I awoke and I set off immediately crazed in my head. I would later fulfill all that I read in those letters. I walked the hills of Ireland and drove out the serpents there and all the people did cry out, “so be it, so be it!”

The story this week was written by Hugh Morrison. The story is copyrighted by the author. Here is the original text:

It was supposed to be a routine flight from the International Space Station to the research outpost on the Moon. Just another simple and boring supply run. Tony had made this same run dozens of times. Easy work and good pay made his job enjoyable. Plenty of time to catch up on sleep and reading as the computers flew the ship for him. About four hours in to the flight a space rock the size of a basketball slammed into the side of the ship. The ships atmosphere explosively decompressed. Intestines and offal painted the walls of the crippled ship.

“Wow, that is maybe the best film I have ever seen. Brilliant story. Great characters. And the camera work and editing were top notch. This is one incredible film.”

“Really? So are you going to distribute it?”

“Oh… Well no.”

“Why?”

“Audiences can’t appreciate a film this good. To high brow.”

“What? You said it was brilliant.”

“It is, but movie goers don’t want brilliant. Sorry. They want big tits, rock hard abs, zombies, aliens, awkward sexual situations, explosions, and sparkling emo vampires. Not stories about plight of indigenous peoples facing greedy industrialists. If it was in 3-D then maybe…”

Sadly, after the horror of Transmorphers: The Fall Of Man, we are returning again to The Asylum for the SyFy Channel premier of The Land That Time Forgot. No, I am not talking about the 1975 classic, based on the novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, directed by Kevin Conner and starring Doug McClure. I am talking about the 2009 Asylum production directed by and starring… Steady… Wait for it… C. Thomas Howell. Now to be fair the story has everything in it to make a great film: Dinosaurs, NAZIs, a submarine, the Arctic, and cave women; but that hasn’t stopped The Asylum in the past. Take for example H.G. Well’s War of the Worlds and War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave. The later was also directed by C. Thomas Howell and both starred him.

So come on out and help us make this film better or at least keep us company while we suffer through another example of why The Asylum should not be allowed to make movies. We’ll save a spot of the virtual couch for you.

Saturday Night in the Snark Cave featuring The Land That Time Forgot will begin at 7:45 PM CT on ustream.tv.

She didn’t have to love me. But, she did and I loved her. Lying next to her. We talked about the future. Our paths weren’t our own any more. On that beautiful night we named our kids, planned our careers and decorated a house we had never seen. We were permanently bounded to each other forever. We later had a church ceremony but I think somewhere amongst the soft kisses and tangled embraces our romance turned to love. Love turned to commitment and commitment turned to marriage. That night on we weren’t two scared kids in love. We were one.

Yes this week the SyFy Channel has choosen The Asylum’s rip off of, er – I mean tribute to, Micheal Bay’s epic FAIL Transformers and Transformers: The Rise of the Fallen. Strangely, the SyFy Channel did not choose to air Transmorphers before showing it’s sequel. But considering The Asylum did give us AVH: Alien vs. Hunter, the worst film ever shown on the SyFy Channel, is possible that Transmorphers did not live up to their pitifully lower standards?

So come out and help us make Transmorphers: The Fall Of Man better. We’re saving a seat on the virtual couch for you.

Saturday Night in the Snark Cave will not be showing the film or playing it’s audio track. You will need to sit down with your laptop or computer and watch the movie on TV (on the SyFy Channel) and listen while we talk bad about it (or good if the film is good). You can interact with me, my co-host, and the rest of the viewers via the ustream.tv chat.
