The elevator doors slide open and Roberts exits the chrome box. An emotional storm of anger, disappointment, frustration for canceling on his wife twists in his mind. Roberts mentally wrestles with himself, ”What if Jeff has found them? It’s too soon. Gawd damn it, Jeff, you better not have screwed up everything.” Pushing open the lab doors Roberts coldly teases,”Talk to me, Jeff! What do we have here: a shadow, a rock, a mound of dirt? Jeff does not answer. Roberts joins Jeff in silence as they watch a video feed of a tentacled creature crawling towards the camera.

“Four-freakin-45 on a Friday! Seriously?” Roberts swore as he punched the button for the elevator with his thumb. “At least the ride downstairs will be quick,” he said out loud to nobody except himself. “So much for date night,” he thought. Roberts pulled out his cell phone and called his wife to explain he’d miss their date as the doors to the elevator opened. “Hi honey,” he said to her voice mail, “I’m going to be late again. Someone probably thinks he discovered life on Io.” He hung up and punched the button for the 4th floor and swore again.

As the video feed faded to static Jeff thought “This isn’t good !” He sent another probe, this time he had it land on higher ground to get an overview of the situation. The video now showed hundreds of the creatures spreading out from the crash site. Jeff got on the phone to his supervisor. “Mr. Roberts, we’ve got a problem.” “Define ‘problem’ Jeff” Mr. Roberts said. “you need to come down here and see this, it looks like an invasion.” “Sit tight, I’ll be right there.” said Mr. Roberts as he grabbed his lab coat and headed to the lab.

The meteorite crashed into the surface of the Jovian moon Io. Jeff marveled at the luck of a tiny object flying through space and smashing into a larger, but still small object. From his lab on Lightning station, Jeff sent a probe down to the volcanic surface to scan the meteor. The first data came back revealed high amounts of alloys, suggesting non-natural composition. When the video feed went live to show creatures crawling out of the wreckage, Jeff decided perhaps random chance had less to do with this event than he had thought. Then tentacles ripped the probe asunder.

He drops the blade, panting in the high bright sun and baking sand of the now-silent arena. Hands on knees, he surveys the bones of the fallen. He nods, wipes his brow, and glares up at the single observer.

“How many times now? And how many more, demon?” he croaks thirstily.

The red-skinned devil answers with a silent grin, spreading and relaxing its wings in the heat of the sun.

He hears the rasp of bones converging across the sand. They click into shape again, as he chuckles. “One more time. Always.”

Plucking up the sword, he swings.
